The trap mechanism features a spring door for each catching compartment. Once set, a split perch holds the doors open. To enter the trap, birds the size of a magpie or crow inevitably drop onto the perch. The perch gives way, and the bird’s momentum takes it past the bottom of the door, which flips up.
Magpie Larsen traps are easily movable due to their small size. Move traps around to deal with specific pairs of magpies. A few traps therefore will cover quite a large area.
You might want to get some Metal Securing Pins to secure the trap to the ground. Cage cups can be affixed inside the trap to offer food or water.

A Magpie Larsen Trap is designed for the humane capture of magpies and other corvids. It helps control their population to protect game birds, songbirds, and their nests from predation.
Yes, the Magpie Larsen Trap is legal to use in the UK, provided it is used in accordance with the relevant General Licences issued by Natural England or other appropriate authorities. Always check and follow current regulations.
This trap is made from strong, durable galvanised steel wire, ensuring it can withstand outdoor use and resist corrosion over time.
The top entry design features a spring-loaded trap door that allows magpies to enter but prevents them from escaping. The decoy compartment helps attract the target birds into the trap.
Place the trap in an area frequented by magpies, such as near game pens, fields, or gardens. Use bait, such as eggs or meat scraps, along with the decoy bird to attract magpies. Ensure the trap is checked daily, as per legal requirements.
Yes, a decoy bird is typically used to lure magpies into the trap. The decoy should be treated humanely, with food, water, and shade provided at all times as required by law.
By law, traps must be checked at least once every 24 hours. During each check, provide food and water for the decoy bird and remove any captured magpies or non-target species.
The Magpie Trap features two catching boxes to enable two birds to be caught. Sit-in the structure, a decoy bird is placed as ‘bait’. This bird is fed, watered and remains in the trap until intruders willingly enter, and once inside, can’t leave.
