Keep spare valves, O-rings, saddle assemblies, connectors, and short runs of pipe. These are the components most exposed to wear, grit, or accidental damage. Having replacements ready avoids downtime during peak rearing.
Match the valve to the drinker model and pipe size. Product descriptions usually specify compatibility. If you replace a valve with the wrong size, the drinker may underfill or overflow.
Replace them when you see cracking, leaks, or loose seating. UV exposure, cold snaps, and repeated handling weaken plastic over time. Good fittings protect your whole line.
Leaks usually come from worn seals, mismatched pipe sizes, or dirt trapped in the fitting. Cleaning and reseating the connector often solves it. If not, replace the part.
Service life varies with water quality and use. Hard water or sediment shortens lifespan. Valves that stick, chatter, or fail to shut off should be replaced immediately.
