A fyke net is a type of fish trap. It consists of a long cylindrical netting bag mounted on rings which contains a series of funnel-shaped openings. This makes it easy for fish to enter the trap but very difficult for them to make their way out.
Fyke nets are fitted with a leader which guides the fish towards the entrance of the bags.
Fyke nets are generally operated in shallow coastal waters, such as estuaries and sheltered bays. They are usually set in contact to the bottom. In areas with strong tidal currents and hauled or checked for catch on a daily basis.
