Vermin Traps FAQs

Are bait stations effective?

Yes, bait stations are a highly effective form of vermin control. They can be used indoors or outdoors.

Bait stations mimics the natural habitats of rodents and exploits their desire to run through tunnels.

Are grey squirrel traps legal in the UK?

Yes. Grey squirrels are classed as a non-native invasive species under UK legislation, and approved traps may be used to control them. The Goodnature A18 is listed under the Spring Traps Approval Order and is legal for use in England (from 1 January 2019) and Wales (from 1 February 2019). All traps must be used in line with the conditions of the Order.

Are live catch traps effective?

Yes, live catch traps are an effective form of vermin control. The traps we sell are easy to set up, so that you can successfully trap vermin that enters your property. Live catch traps are easy to move. This means you only need a few traps to cover a large area.

Do bait stations attract more mice?

No, bait stations are not believed to attract more mice or rats into the area. Rodents are typically drawn by food, water or heat.

Do Goodnature traps work?

Yes, Goodnature traps are among the best on the market and excellent solution for anyone looking for an effective vermin control measure. The patented technology humanely dispatches rats and grey squirrels automatically and self-reset, meaning they do not require labour intensive maintenance after the initial set up.

Do I need a licence to trap grey squirrels?

No general licence is required to trap grey squirrels in the UK. However, you are legally responsible for the welfare of any animal caught. Captured grey squirrels must be humanely dispatched and cannot be released, as release of a non-native invasive species is prohibited.

Do I need vermin control?

Deciding whether you need vermin control should be based on what vermin you have encountered, and the context. If your business is public facing and/or food related, you will need to control the vermin under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, or the Food Safety Act 1990. Other industries may also require action to avoid legal consequences.

Do rats avoid bait stations?

Rats are intelligent animals. Often they will be suspicious of new objects in their surroundings and avoid them. Consequently, it may take a couple of days for the bait station to be effective.

Do you stock Goodnature trap accessories?

Yes, we stock a range of Goodnature spares and accessories, including replacement co2 cannisters, safety tunnels and lure baskets. We also sell an A24 trap guard that helps camouflage the trap as well as 200ml lure pouches in hazel nut, chocolate, nut butter and cinnamon flavours.

The trap comes flat-packed with full assembly instructions. It’s straightforward to put together and can be easily dismantled for storage.

Does the rabbit trap come assembled?

No, the trap comes flat-packed but is easy to assemble and foldable for convenient storage. Full assembly instructions are included.

How do bait stations work?

Bait stations are a popular form of vermin control. They typically take the form of a plastic box with a hole for the rodent to enter. This exploits rats natural desire to explore tunnels.

How do I get rid of vermin?

We stock a variety of vermin control measures at Collins Nets, so we’re guaranteed to have a product to meet the needs of your estate, farm or fishery. We sell poisons, traps and deterrents that allow you to target a range of species effectively.

Your chosen method should be dependent on the species you are targeting. We suggest speaking to a professional for advice and guidance before setting out. The Think Wildlife CRRU offer instruction on responsible rodent control. The Collins Nets team can also offer advice and product recommendations over the phone.

How do I humanely dispose of a dispatched grey squirrel?

Dispatched squirrels should be removed promptly from beneath the trap and disposed of in line with local guidance. Many estates incinerate or bury carcasses on site. Consult your local authority if you are unsure of the rules in your area.

How do I set up a mouse trap?

To set up a mouse trap safely, follow these steps:

  1. Place the Bait: Begin by applying bait (such as peanut butter, chocolate, or commercial rodent bait) on the bait cup or trigger area. A small amount is enough; overloading may interfere with the trap’s trigger sensitivity.
  2. Position the Trap Correctly: Place the trap where you’ve observed mouse activity, ideally along walls or in dark, enclosed spaces. Mice typically travel along walls, so positioning the trap perpendicular to the wall increases the chance of capture.
  3. Activate the Trap: Carefully pull back the spring-loaded bar until it locks into place behind the trigger. Ensure your fingers are clear of the trap mechanism while setting it to avoid injury.
  4. Check the Trap Regularly: Inspect the trap daily. If a mouse is caught, dispose of it promptly and reset the trap if needed.

How effective are rabbit traps?

Rabbit traps are highly effective when properly set up with the right bait and placement. They offer a humane and targeted way to manage rabbit populations without harming other wildlife.

How durable are live catch traps?

We sell a wide range of live vermin traps at Collins Nets. We only stock high quality products that are durable and designed to stand the test of time.

How long do bait stations take to work?

It can take a couple of days for rodents to start investigating the bait station – rats can be suspicious of new objects. Rat poisons are highly toxic. This means that rats will typically die within a couple of hours of ingesting the poison that is placed within the bait station.

How many mouse traps will I need?

This depends on the scale of the problem, but it’s generally more effective to set several traps across known routes and entry points rather than relying on just one. For larger or ongoing infestations, our team can advise on a suitable setup for your site.

How often should you check a bait station?

We recommend that you check the bait station every day. This will enable you to check if any mice or rats have been dispatched and allow you to top up the bait as needed. Once the rodent population begins to decline you will only need to check the bait station on a weekly basis.

Is the Springer Mk6 trap humane?

Spring traps are effective in killing vermin by using wider jaws which often ensures a quick and painless death. However, if you would prefer to catch vermin humanely and release them unharmed then take look at our range of live catch traps – which cater for anything from rats to foxes to magpies. Our live catch vermin traps are durable, effective, easy to use and suitable to carry small animals such as rats and mice.

What are the benefits of using a bait station?

Bait stations have many advantages.

  1. The plastic housing prevents the bait becoming damp or damaged – this is especially useful if the trap is set outside. Containing the poison within a small area, will prevent spillages and contamination.
  2. Bait stations are dark and confined, which mimics the types of environments that rodents like to frequent. This means that rats will feel safe and secure and more likely to feed
  3. The bait is safely contained within the plastic housing. This means the poison or trap cannot be accessed by non-target species. Some of the bait stations we sell at Collins Nets have locks on them to prevent them being opened by anyone other than the person that initially set the trap up.

What are vermin traps?

Vermin traps are used to control unwanted vermin, such as rats, mice, squirrels, stoats and weasels. They typically have a spring-loaded arm or door that is activated when pressure is applied to the baited trap.

There are a variety of vermin traps on the market – some will instantly kill the rodent. Others are designed to trap the vermin, so that it can be released away from the site.
