Setting a tunnel mole trap properly is key to catching moles effectively. Here’s a clear step-by-step guide:
Look for straight tunnels (not the winding surface runs) — these are main travel routes.
Flatten a small section of the tunnel and check it after a day.
If it pops back up, it’s active, and that’s where you want to set your trap.
Use a small shovel or trowel to open the tunnel where you found activity.
Clear just enough soil to fit your trap — don’t make a huge hole.
Try to keep the tunnel as natural as possible so the mole doesn’t get suspicious.
Lightly cover the trap area with loose dirt or grass to block light from entering the tunnel — moles avoid tunnels with light leaks.
Avoid putting too much weight that could set off the trap prematurely.
Check the trap daily.
If no mole is caught after 2 days, move the trap to a new spot.
Wear gloves when handling traps to avoid leaving human scent.
Set multiple traps if you have lots of tunnels.
Morning and evening are the best times for mole activity.
