The first few weeks are when young birds need warmth the most. The PAR38 Infrared Heat Lamp Bulb gives a focused, even spread of heat beneath the lamp. This lets chicks, poults and pheasant or partridge young warm up when they need to and move away when they don’t. It’s a simple, proven way to heat brooders, rearing pens and small sheds, and gamekeepers, poultry keepers and smallholders have used it for years.

Built for the rearing environment

Rearing sheds are dusty, damp and busy. This bulb is made from pressed hard glass rather than the thinner glass used in standard heat lamps, so it stands up much better to knocks and stray splashes of water from drinkers. The ruby tint cuts down bright white glare and gives a softer red light. Many keepers find this helps keep birds settled under the lamp.

Choosing the right setup

• Fitting: Standard E27 screw fitting. For safety and best results we recommend the Rearing Lamp Holder/Protector, which has a heat-resistant holder and a guard around the bulb.
• Height: Hang the lamp on a chain or cord so you can raise it as the birds grow and need less heat.
• Reading your birds: Birds huddled tightly under the lamp are too cold, so lower it. Birds pushed out to the edges of the pen are too hot, so raise it. Birds spread evenly and moving about freely means the height is about right.
• Coverage: For larger groups or bigger sheds, use more than one lamp so every bird can reach a warm spot without crowding.

Safety and care

• Always use the bulb in a suitable heat-resistant holder with a guard. Never let it touch bedding, litter or timber.
• Keep at least the manufacturer’s recommended distance between the bulb and any flammable material.
• Let the bulb cool fully before handling or replacing it.
• The hard glass resists splashes, but don’t spray it directly or let it sit in water.
• Check cables, holders and fixings regularly during the rearing season.
