How do you make a pheasant release pen?

There are a number of steps to follow when building a pheasant release pen. Every game keeper will have their own way, but there are guidelines set out by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust.

How to build a pheasant release pen

• Clear a 4m track for your pen perimeter
• Site the fence in the middle
• Remove any low hanging branches
• The pen should have sunny areas, shrubby ground cover and roosting trees
• The fence should be 7ft high with 1ft buried below the ground or turned out and secured with U pins
• 1ft should be turned out at the top to stop predators getting in
• Jumbo release pen netting should be used at the top
• Galvanised wire netting should be used at the bottom
• Straining wire is positioned at the top of the posts
• Re-entry fox grid holes should be made every 40 – 50 metres
• Most gamekeepers choose to have an electric fence surrounding the pen
