How do I choose the right netting material for outdoor use? 

Most outdoor netting is made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a UV-stabilised plastic twine that resists rot, doesn’t absorb water, and holds up over years of exposure to UK weather. It comes in two main constructions: knotted netting, which is more rigid and better suited to heavy-duty applications like golf course perimeter netting, and knotless netting, which is softer and less likely to snag or damage what it’s protecting, often used for bird and game netting.

Mesh size affects both strength and function. A smaller mesh, such as 20mm or 28mm square mesh netting, gives a stronger barrier and is better for stopping fast-moving objects like golf balls. A larger, more open mesh allows better airflow and is more common in windbreak and screen netting, where reducing wind exposure matters more than a solid barrier.

For applications needing rigidity and vermin resistance rather than flexibility, galvanised wire netting is a better fit than plastic mesh.

Look for overlocked or reinforced edges on any netting you buy. This stops the mesh fraying at the point where it takes the most strain, extending its working life considerably.
